Anthony's Nose trail is located in the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, which is about 1.5 hour drive from Long Island, NY making it a perfect day hike if you're from the area. This is a 7.6 mile out and back trail taking you to the summit of Anthony's Nose. Though it is rated as a hard trail, you can click here for easier and shorter routes available in the area. This is a great opportunity to take a hike with your dog and take a 10 minute drive to Peekskill brewery after, which is also dog friendly!

Parking

The parking is very limited and it can get crowded due to its popularity and proximity. I suggest arriving no later than 8 am, but really the sooner the better especially since you have approximately a 3.5-4.5 hour hike ahead. We parked on the side street along with a line of cars and did not receive a ticket. There is no phone service when you get closer so I would download the google map directions to the trail head and to Peekskill brewery if you plan to go there after.

What to Pack

-Hiking boots

-Merino wool socks

-32 oz of water

-Lunch

-Snacks

-Bug spray

-Sunblock

-Hat (less shady as you reach the top)

-If bringing your pup then a poop bag, treats, and a travel water bowl is also required

Anthony's Nose is dog friendly trail however, they must be kept on leash and picked up after. It is well marked and easy to follow. The start of the hike is steep with tons of rock scrambling. Do not feel discouraged- keep going! The first hour or so is the most challenging part but then it eases up. If you have never done a hard hike before this would be a great first one!

The beginning of the trail is lovely and refreshing as you pass through the forest. As you ascend to higher grounds you'll be rewarded with views of the Hudson River and beautiful views of train tracks passing through hills. We were grateful that we had the opportunity to watch a train pass by.

Summiting was absolutely beautiful. We were so high in elevation that hawks and other birds were flying at the same altitude, giving us a unique perspective of nature. The view of the Bear Mountain Bridge from the Westchester side was stunning with the rolling hills and foliage. This trail is best in the summer or fall seasons. We spent about 30 minutes here having lunch, relaxing with my dog, and took in the views.

Descending down was not bad at all. For the steeper parts its best to walk sideways or in a loose zig zag pattern. This will be easier on your knees and feet.

Beer Here!

After a solid hike the beer always taste better. Head on over to Peekskill Brewery for a cold one. It's only 10 minutes away and there is an amazing atmosphere and live music. Click here to check the schedule to see what upcoming events they'll have!
